In 1974 after the third try, he became successful. He eventually scored political gains through running for Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and triumphing through simply twelve votes. Bernie served as mayor from 1981 to 1989 (re-elected three instances) and became regarded for his self-defined Socialist perspectives and outspoken nature.

The political underdog appeared as a not likely candidate for the countrywide workplace but clinched a 1990 seat as an unbiased candidate within the U.S. residence of Representatives. In his early days within the parliament house, he alienated colleagues with his outspoken complaints of each political party. He admonished politicians who have been on the rich versus the common or poor American and famously voted and endorsed for banking reform. 

In  2005, he started trying to be part of the U.S. Senate when Jim Jeffords announced he was no longer searching for reelection. Sanders had the assistance and endorsement of both Chuck Schumer and then-senator Barack Obama and the assistance of Howard Dean and Senate Minority chief Harry Reid. He defeated wealthy Tarrant, who had spent $7 million of his own wealth on his campaign, by a large margin, and went on to be re-elected with 70% of the vote in 2012 and 2018.
